Rotate PDF

You scan a contract and pages 2 and 3 come out sideways. A colleague emails a PDF that opens upside down. Re scanning is a pain; rotating is a ten second fix. This rotate PDF tool turns pages 90, 180 or 270 degrees, the whole document, or just the pages you pick, like 2 to 3, and saves the rotation permanently into the file: free, no sign up, no watermark. It only updates the orientation metadata, so quality never changes, and everything happens in your browser.

    The formula

    • Your PDF is loaded in memory and the current rotation of every page is read.
    • The page range you typed (for example 1-3, 5) is parsed into a list of pages; "all" selects every page.
    • Each selected page gets its rotation angle updated by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, wrapping at 360.
    • The document is re-saved locally and offered as rotated.pdf, no re-rendering, so quality never changes.

    A worked example

A scanned contract where pages 2 and 3 came out sideways: type "2 to 3", choose 90° clockwise, press Rotate PDF, and download rotated.pdf with those two pages fixed.

    More about the Rotate PDF

    Rotate two pages, not thirty

The most common real case is a mostly fine scan with a couple of sideways pages. Typing 2 to 3 in the page field fixes exactly those pages and leaves the rest alone, far better than rotating the whole document and then rotating everything back.

Page ranges use the same format throughout this site: singles and ranges separated by commas, like 1 to 3, 5. Leave the field as 'all' only when the entire document is wrong.

Picking the right angle without guessing twice

90° clockwise and 270° are mirror images, if you are unsure which way a page needs to turn, picture the top of the page rotating toward the right for 90° clockwise. Upside down pages need 180°; sideways scans usually need 90° one way or the other.

There is no penalty for a wrong guess: the tool is instant and free, so rotate, re open, and if it is still wrong, rotate again. A 90° mistake is fixed by a 270° turn.

Permanent rotation vs your reader's rotate button

Every PDF reader has a view rotation button, but it only changes your screen, the file itself stays sideways, and the next person who opens it sees the same mess. This tool writes the new orientation into the PDF file, so the fix survives emailing, printing and uploading.

That is the whole point: fix it once, properly, instead of every recipient rotating their view forever.

Fixing scans before you file them

Sideways pages in an archive are a slow poison: every future search, print and share carries the defect. Take the ten seconds to rotate properly now, while the source is in front of you, rather than discovering it sideways two years later.

If whole batches come out rotated (a scanner with a stuck setting), fix one file to confirm the angle, then apply the same rotation to the rest. Consistent input, consistent fix, no per file guessing.

Rotation and page size: a non issue

Rotating swaps width and height logically, but the page dimensions in the file stay the same, a rotated A4 page is still A4, just oriented differently. Printers handle it automatically; you do not need to resize anything after rotating.

The one exception: if a page was scanned at the wrong aspect (a landscape scan of a portrait page), rotation fixes the orientation but the content keeps its scanned proportions. Re scan those properly instead of rotating.

    Batch rotating scanned documents

When a whole batch of scans comes out sideways (a scanner feeder with a stuck setting), the fix is the same rotation applied to every file. Do one file first to confirm the angle, 90° clockwise, say, then apply it to the rest without re guessing each time.

Name the fixed files clearly (contract fixed.pdf) and spot check one before deleting the originals. Batch work rewards a consistent process: confirm once, apply many times, verify at the end.

If only some pages in each file are wrong, though, batch rotation will not help, those need the per page ranges (2 to 3, 7) applied file by file. Mixed problems need individual attention.

    Rotation and digital signatures

Rotating a PDF can invalidate its digital signature, the signature covers the document's exact bytes, and rotation changes them. If the PDF is signed, rotate a COPY and keep the signed original untouched.

For unsigned documents, rotation is harmless and reversible. But if you plan to get the document signed, do all rotation first, then sign, signing is always the last step.

When in doubt, check for a signature panel or certificate badge before rotating. Five seconds of checking beats explaining to a client why their signed contract now shows 'signature invalid'.

    Rotating pages in scanned books

Book scans often have every page slightly crooked (not just wrong way round), rotation fixes orientation, not skew. For crooked scans you need deskewing, a separate image processing step, ideally before creating the PDF.

If only some pages are upside down (foldouts, wide tables scanned separately), use page ranges to target exactly those pages. Do not rotate the whole document for five bad pages.

After fixing a book scan, add page numbers, scans rarely have searchable numbers, and 'go to page 112' only works if the numbers exist. Rotate first, number second.

Clearing a mixed orientation scan in a sensible order

Suppose a 30 page scanned agreement comes back with pages 2 and 3 turned left, page 17 upside down and page 24 turned right, while the other 26 pages are fine. Work through it in passes by angle, not page by page: enter 2 to 3 first and turn them 90 degrees the way they lean, then handle 17 with a 180-degree turn, then 24 with a 270-degree turn. Three passes fix all four pages and the untouched pages are never risked.

The common mistakes are rotating the whole file because one pass feels easier, and guessing the direction for every page from memory. Both end with pages that were correct now sideways. Instead, scroll the document once and note the page number and lean of each bad page before you start, the way you would mark up a proof. Angles also add up predictably: two 90 degree clockwise turns equal one 180, so a page you over turned is recovered by continuing the same direction rather than starting again.

Rotate first when other jobs are queued behind it

Rotation belongs at the front of any chain of PDF jobs. If you plan to run a sideways scan through text recognition, recognise it after rotating, because recognition software reads lines in the order it expects them and upside down pages produce garbled or empty text. The same logic applies to printing: a permanently rotated file prints upright on any machine, while a file fixed only on your screen prints sideways on the next printer it meets.

Order matters in the other direction too. If a document is already signed, or you are about to send it for signing, finish every rotation before the signature goes on, and treat a signed file as read only afterwards. Likewise, rotate before you split, merge or add page numbers, so the page order and numbering you apply are the final ones. One fixed, upright master copy, saved before any other editing, prevents most version confusion later.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate only pages 2 and 3?

Type 2 to 3 in the pages field instead of 'all', choose your angle, and press Rotate PDF. Just those two pages turn; the other twenty eight stay exactly as they were.

What is the difference between 90° and 270°?

They turn the page in opposite directions, 90° clockwise versus 90° counterclockwise. If a page is sideways to the left, one of them fixes it and the other makes it worse; try 90° first and flip to 270° if needed.

Will the rotation stay when I email the PDF?

It does, the fix is written into the file, not just your screen. Unlike your reader's view rotate button, this tool stores the new orientation inside the PDF itself, so the pages stay fixed when the document is reopened, printed, shared or uploaded anywhere.

Can I rotate a scanned PDF?

Yes, scans rotate just like any other PDF. Orientation is metadata on the page, so it makes no difference whether the content is text or a scanned image.

    Does rotating reduce quality?

No. Rotation only changes the page's orientation flag; pages are not re rendered, so text, images and layout keep their original quality bit for bit.

    Can I undo a rotation?

Yes, rotate again. A 90° turn is undone by 270° (or three more 90° turns), and 180° undoes itself. Keep the original file until you are happy with the result, just in case.

Is it safe to rotate a private or sensitive PDF online?

The rotate PDF tool above processes your file entirely on your device, so nothing is uploaded to a server at all, there is no data trail for contracts, medical forms or personal records. Some online tools send your file to their servers before processing it, which is worth keeping in mind for anything sensitive. Here there is also no account or watermark.

Can I rotate a whole PDF at once, or only one page at a time?

Both. You can select a range like pages 2 to 3 and rotate just those, pick pages one by one, or rotate the entire document in a single click. A page range option makes it quick to fix a handful of sideways scans inside a long file. Rotation is saved permanently into the file with no loss of quality.

Can I turn different pages by different angles in the same PDF?

Yes, by working in passes. Rotate the pages that need 90 degrees first with a page list such as 2 to 3, save the result, then run the output again for the pages that need 180 or 270 degrees, such as an upside down page 17. Each pass only touches the pages you name. Trying to fix every angle in a single pass is the one thing the tool cannot do, because one run applies one chosen angle.

Does rotating a page change its size or margins?

A 90 or 270 degree turn swaps the page dimensions, a portrait A4 page becomes landscape in its stored frame, with width and height exchanged, but the content itself is not cropped, stretched or re margined. A 180 degree turn changes no dimensions at all. Text, images and white space all stay exactly where they were relative to the page; only the orientation flag and, for quarter turns, the frame orientation change.
