The formula

  • Tip = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100)
  • Total = bill + tip
  • Each person pays = total ÷ number of people

A worked example

A $86.40 dinner with an 18% tip adds $15.55, making the total $101.95. Split between four people that is $25.49 each, or $26.00 each with rounding up, which leaves the server a slightly larger tip of $17.60.

How much to tip, and the 10 second mental maths

The US norm for sit down restaurant service is 15 to 20% of the pre tax bill, 15% for adequate service, 18 to 20% for good, more for exceptional. Tip on the food and drink subtotal, not the tax. And always scan the receipt first: parties of six or more often have an automatic gratuity already added.

Here is the mental shortcut the calculator runs for you: 10% of any bill is the decimal point moved one place left, $64.50 becomes $6.45. Double it for 20% ($12.90); add half of it again for 15% ($9.68). Those two moves cover every standard tip. The calculator above just does them instantly and splits the result across the table.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount exactly as printed, before tip.
  2. Pick a tip percentage, or type your own in the custom field.
  3. Say how many people are splitting the check.
  4. Switch on rounding for a clean per person figure, then copy the result to share it.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in a US restaurant?

Fifteen to twenty per cent of the pre tax bill is the normal range for table service in the US, with 20% the common default for good service. Counter service and coffee shops run lower.

Should I tip on the pre tax or post tax amount?

Tip on the pre tax subtotal, that is the standard, and it costs you slightly less. If you enter the post tax total here, the percentage just applies to that bigger figure.

Do people tip in the UK and Europe?

Much less. Many UK restaurants add a discretionary service charge of 10 to 12.5%, and across most of Europe, rounding up or leaving 5 to 10% counts as generous. Always check whether service is already on the bill before adding more.

How much should I tip a bartender?

In the US, $1 to $2 per drink is the standard, a little more for cocktails that take real work. In the UK, tipping bartenders is not expected, though rounding up, or offering \"one for yourself\" (roughly £1, £2) in a traditional pub, is a friendly gesture.

How much do you tip hotel housekeeping?

In the US, $2 to $5 per night, left daily, not just at checkout, since the staff rotate. In the UK, tipping housekeeping is uncommon, but £1, £2 a night is appreciated in nicer hotels. In Australia and most of Europe, it is simply not expected.

How do you split a bill when everyone tips differently?

Have each person work out their own share: their items plus tax, then their chosen tip percentage on that subtotal. On a $120 bill split three ways, 15%, 18% and 20% tippers, the individual totals land around $46, $47.20 and $48. This calculator handles the per person math so nobody has to argue about it.

How much should I tip a taxi or Uber driver?

In the US, 10 to 20% of the fare is normal, and the apps make it easy to add after the ride. In the UK, rounding up to the nearest pound is plenty. In Australia and most of Europe, tipping drivers is rare, rounding up is generous.

Should I tip on the discounted price when I use a coupon?

Tip on what the meal would have cost before the coupon. Your server did the same work bringing out the full order, and the discount is between you and the restaurant, not a smaller workload for the staff. It is the same logic delivery etiquette uses: the driver's effort does not shrink just because you had a promo code.

Does the delivery fee count as the driver's tip?

No, that fee goes to the restaurant or the app to cover their costs; the driver does not see it as part of their pay. So the tip you add is still the driver's earnings, and you should tip on the food subtotal as usual. When in doubt, the calculator above keeps the math clean between what you pay the store and what the driver gets.
