US Sales Tax Calculator by State
US sales tax is simple in theory and chaos in practice: every state sets its own rate, then counties and cities pile on top. This free sales tax calculator by US state works both ways, add tax to a price to see the register total, or strip it out of a receipt to find the pre tax amount. Pick your state for its base rate, or enter your exact combined state plus local rate. Rates combine state and local jurisdictions using destination based sourcing where it applies, with plain English notes on economic nexus thresholds and exemption certificates for sellers.

The formula
Adding tax: tax = price × (rate ÷ 100), and total = price + taxRemoving tax: pre tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)Tax removed = total − pre-tax price
A worked example
A $249.99 item in California at the 7.25% state base rate carries $18.12 of tax, for a total of $268.11. Working backwards, a $268.11 receipt at the same rate came from a $249.99 pre tax price.

Why US sales tax has two layers
A concrete example both ways. A $249.99 item in California at the 7.25% state base rate: $249.99 × 0.0725 = $18.12 of tax, $268.11 total. Reverse: a $268.11 receipt at the same rate → $268.11 ÷ 1.0725 = $249.99 pre tax. Now the real world version: your actual combined rate with county and city add ons might be 9.5%, making the true total $273.74. That $5.63 gap between base rate maths and reality is why the custom rate field exists, use it.
People use this in three recurring ways. Shoppers check the true out the door price before buying, especially across state lines where the rate changes the deal. Small businesses verify the tax on supplier invoices and receipts. And anyone doing expenses or bookkeeping strips tax out of totals to record the pre tax amounts. The reverse mode is the unsung hero, receipt archaeology is a genuine business need.
Working backwards and what's exempt
Tips. Always use your combined local rate for real decisions; the state base is a floor, not the price. Keep a recent receipt from your usual stores, the combined rate printed there is authoritative for your ZIP code. Remember exemptions: if your state does not tax groceries, do not apply the rate to the whole cart. And for online purchases, the seller should collect your state's rate at checkout; if they did not, the use tax question is yours.
What it does not know: your local add ons (only you know those, hence custom rate), exemption rules (state specific), or special district taxes. Rates change when legislatures act, so if a receipt disagrees with the calculator's state base, the receipt is right and the rate moved. This is arithmetic over rates you supply; the tax law itself lives with your state's department of revenue.

Frequently asked questions
Which states have no sales tax at all?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, NOMAD, as the mnemonic goes. But read the fine print: Alaska lets boroughs and cities levy their own local tax, so "no statewide tax" does not always mean zero at the till. Everywhere else, the state rate is just the starting point.
Is the state rate the full amount I will pay?
Almost never. The calculator's state list holds base rates only; counties, cities and special districts add their own on top. A 7.25% California base can easily be 9 to 10% after local add ons. For the exact figure, pull the combined rate from a recent receipt and use the custom rate mode. It takes ten seconds and beats every estimate.
Is sales tax charged before or after a discount?
In most states, on the discounted price, coupons and sales lower the tax you pay, not just the price. That is also why the receipt maths sometimes surprises people: the taxable base is the final selling price, after the store's discounts but generally before manufacturer's coupons in some states.
What is use tax, and do I owe it?
Sales tax is collected by the seller at the till; use tax is what you owe when no sales tax was collected, typically on out of state or online purchases shipped to your home state. Most people never think about it, but states are enforcing it more aggressively on big ticket items these days. When in doubt, your state's department of revenue explains it in plain terms.
Are groceries and clothes taxed?
Completely state dependent, there is no national rule. Many states exempt groceries and prescription medicine, a few exempt certain clothing, and several run annual sales tax holidays. Before you assume, check your state's department of revenue for the current exemption list.
Do I pay sales tax on online purchases?
Usually yes. Since the 2018 Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, most states require out of state sellers with enough sales in the state (economic nexus) to collect sales tax, and marketplace facilitator laws mean Amazon, eBay and similar platforms collect it for their sellers. The rate charged is generally the combined rate at your delivery address, not the seller's location.
Is sales tax charged on services like haircuts or repairs?
It varies by state, and the taxable list keeps growing. Most states still exempt the majority of services, but Texas, New York and Washington tax specific ones (repairs, cleaning, some professional services), and others keep widening the net to plug budget gaps. If a service invoice shows tax, it is almost certainly right for that state; if something looks off, your state's revenue department has the final word.
Is delivery or shipping charged sales tax?
Roughly half the states tax delivery charges in some form. The usual pattern: if shipping is bundled into the sale price or not broken out separately on the invoice, it gets taxed like the item; if it is stated separately, many states leave it alone. A few states tax it no matter what. Before assuming, check your own state's rule. It is the difference between a correct total and a surprise at checkout.
Do businesses pay sales tax on inventory they plan to resell?
Generally no, sales tax is meant to fall on the final buyer, not on every step of the supply chain. Retailers buy inventory tax free using a resale certificate, then collect tax from the customer at checkout. If you are starting a small shop, your state's revenue department can issue the certificate you need.
How do I find the pre tax price from a total with tax?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal, a $107 total at 7% divided by 1.07 gives a $100 pre tax price. Switch the calculator to "Remove tax" and it does this in one step.
