PDF to Excel Converter
Got a table locked inside a PDF, a price list, an invoice, a bank statement, and need it as a spreadsheet you can actually sort, filter and total? This converts a PDF's text into a real .xlsx file: text items are grouped into rows and split into columns by their spacing, and values that are numbers are written as numbers, not text. An honest caveat up front: it rebuilds the table from the PDF's text positions, so merged cells and fancy formatting do not survive, but the data lands in proper rows and columns. And it all happens in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

The formula
Your PDF is opened with pdf.js in your browser and the positioned text of every page is read, the file is never uploaded.Text items are grouped into rows by their vertical position, ordered top-to-bottom, and split into columns wherever the horizontal gap between items is wide.Cells that parse as numbers (commas and currency symbols are stripped first) are written as real numbers, so totals and sorts work straight away; everything else stays text. The rows are written to an .xlsx workbook with SheetJS, one worksheet per page, or a single sheet if you untick the option, and offered as a browser download.
A worked example
A one page fruit.pdf price list with the table Item / Quantity / Price and rows Apples 12 1.50, Pears 8 2.25 and Oranges 20 0.75 converts to fruit converted.xlsx with one worksheet named Page 1: the header row reads Item, Quantity, Price, and the values land as real numbers, 12 and 1.5, 8 and 2.25, 20 and 0.75, in the cells under Quantity and Price, ready to sort or total. This exact table was used to test the converter and the cell values above are the verified result.
More about the PDF to Excel
What this converter actually does
A typical run: statement.pdf, a few pages of transactions in neat columns. Select it, leave "One worksheet per page" ticked (or untick it for a single combined sheet), press Convert to Excel, and download a .xlsx file that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. Each page becomes a worksheet named Page 1, Page 2 and so on, with the page's text laid out in rows and columns that follow the spacing in the PDF.
The use cases cluster around data rescue. Bookkeepers pull bank statements and ledgers out of PDF into spreadsheets they can reconcile. Shopkeepers turn a supplier's PDF price list into a sheet they can mark up. Analysts lift tables out of reports instead of retyping figures by hand, and retyping figures is exactly where transcription errors creep in. If the numbers matter, converting beats copying every time.
Getting clean tables out, and the honest limits
How the columns are decided: the converter groups text items into rows by their vertical position, then starts a new column wherever the horizontal gap between two neighbouring items is wide (about 10 points or more). Clear, consistent column spacing in the PDF gives clean columns out. Two honest consequences follow. First, a cell whose text is split into separate positioned fragments with wide gaps, some PDFs typeset a single value as several pieces, can land as two cells. Second, items spaced closely together are joined into one cell with a space, which is what you want for multi word entries like "Granny Smith apples".
What does not survive, without varnish: merged cells come out as separate cells (the value sits in the first, the rest are empty); cell colours, borders, fonts and column widths are not carried over; and a table drawn as lines and images rather than real text has nothing to extract. Numbers are detected after stripping commas and currency symbols, so 1,250 and $1.50 become the numbers 1250 and 1.5, but a value like "12 kg" or a date stays text, because it is not purely a number. Scanned, image only pages are reported in the summary rather than silently skipped, so you always know which pages need an OCR step first.
Private by design, your file never leaves your device
The whole conversion runs locally in your browser: pdf.js reads the PDF and SheetJS writes the spreadsheet on your own device. No upload, no server copy, no account, no copy of your bank statement or invoice sitting in someone else's storage. For financial documents that is not a nice to have. It is the difference between converting a statement and handing it to a stranger. Close the tab and nothing remains.
How to use the PDF to Excel
- Click Select PDF file and choose one PDF document with a table or data you need.
- Choose whether each page becomes its own worksheet (ticked) or all pages combine into one sheet.
- Press Convert to Excel and watch the progress bar as each page is read.
- When it finishes, read the summary, it tells you how many pages and rows were converted and flags any page with no extractable text.
- Click Download Excel File to save the .xlsx to your device and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to Excel converter really free?
Yes, free and unlimited, with no signup, no watermark and no daily cap. The conversion runs in your browser, so there is no server cost to pass on and nothing to meter.
Will my formatting survive the conversion?
Honestly, no, and any converter that promises otherwise is overselling. Fonts, colours, borders, column widths and merged cells do not carry over, because the tool rebuilds the table from the PDF's text positions. What you get is the data itself in clean rows and columns, which is the part that is painful to retype. A minute of styling in Excel finishes the job.
Can it convert a scanned PDF?
Not directly. A scanned PDF is pictures of text, so there is no text layer to extract. The converter tells you plainly which pages had no extractable text rather than handing you an empty sheet. Run the scan through an OCR step first to add a text layer, then convert the result here.
How do tables become columns?
Text items are grouped into rows by their vertical position, ordered top to bottom and left to right. A new column starts wherever the horizontal gap between neighbouring items is wide, about 10 points or more, while closely spaced items are joined into one cell with a space. PDFs with clear, consistent column spacing convert the cleanest.
Can I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?
Yes, bank statements are one of the most common uses. Date, description and amount columns land in separate cells and amounts become real numbers you can total. Because the conversion happens entirely in your browser and the file is never uploaded, it is also the private way to do it: your statement never leaves your device.
Is it safe to convert a confidential PDF here?
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser, no upload, no server copy, no account. For statements, invoices and ledgers that is meaningfully safer than sending the file to a conversion service and trusting its deletion policy.
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no imposed limit, no page cap and no size cap from us. The practical limit is your device's memory, because the PDF is processed in the browser; very large files (hundreds of pages) can take a while and work best on a desktop browser. If a huge file struggles, split it with our Split PDF tool and convert the parts.
My numbers came out as text and will not add up. How do I fix that?
This converter already writes anything that parses as a number, after stripping commas and currency symbols, as a real numeric cell, so converted values should total straight away. If a value stayed text, it usually contains something extra, like "12 kg" or a trailing note, which makes it a label rather than a number. In Excel you can fix stragglers with the VALUE function, or select the cells and use the "Convert to Number" prompt on the green triangle warning.
How are multi page PDFs handled?
With "One worksheet per page" ticked (the default), each page becomes its own worksheet named Page 1, Page 2 and so on. Untick it and every page's rows are combined into a single worksheet, in page order, handy when one table runs across several pages.
Can it convert a password protected PDF?
No, an encrypted PDF will not open here, and the tool tells you that plainly rather than failing mysteriously. Remove the password first if you have the owner password, then convert.
